Spiritual Aphasia

The Spirit himself intercedes for us.
                  —Romans 8:26

Aphasia: loss or impairment of the power to use or comprehend words (Merriam-Webster)

I frequently get stopped in my tracks while writing these essays when I can’t come up with the word I need to describe what I’m trying to say.

Are you ever at a loss for words?

In our prayers, we’re often up against what I call “spiritual aphasia.” We can’t find the words to express our feelings and needs.

That’s when the Spirit comes to our rescue, speaking to God on our behalf and translating our concerns in ways we can’t. “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us . . . and [God] knows the mind of the Spirit” (Rom 8:26, 27).

The Spirit is your interpreter and advocate.
