How’s Your Hearing?

Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your heart.
        —Hebrews 4:7

God singled out Moses and saddled him with a heavy mission: “I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Ex 3:10).

God singled out Saul and saddled him with a distasteful job, appointing him—a dyed-in-the-wool Jew—to be his apostle to the Gentiles.

God’s call isn’t always so direct. He didn’t single out Isaiah; Isaiah just overheard him asking, “Whom shall I send?” Isaiah said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Is 6:8).

God’s call to you may not be loud or irresistible. It may be a faint whisper telling you about someone who needs a kind word, an encouraging visit, a thoughtful note.

Do you hear the call?

Your call isn’t conveyed by how loudly he speaks,
but by how well you hear.
