Let me know how fleeting my life is.
—Psalm 39:4
There’s nothing like aging to awaken us to the shortness of life. By the time realization hits us, there may not be much life left.
There are many things that steal our minutes and suck the oxygen out of our hours. A recent study gave the following time expenditures in the lifetime of the average American:
- Six months waiting at stoplights.
- Eight months opening junk mail.
- Eighteen months looking for lost stuff.
- Five years standing in lines.
There are some time-traps that you don’t control. But much of the time allotted to you is yours to command. To waste it is an irretrievable loss.
“Where did the time go?” is a common geriatric question—one that you will be asking sooner than you think.
You choose how you spend your time.
But you can spend it only once.
