Eating from the Wrong Plate

Examine yourselves . . . test yourselves.
                   —2 Corinthians 13:5

At a White House banquet commemorating the 100th anniversary of Harry Truman’s birth, a man who had served in the Truman Administration asked the woman seated next to him, “Did I get your name right? Is your name Post?”

“Yes,” she answered.

“Is it Emily Post?”

“Yes.”

“Are you the world-renowned authority on manners?”

“Yes,” Mrs. Post said. “Why do you ask.”

“Because,” he said, “you have just eaten my salad.”

We all eat from the wrong plate occasionally.

Test yourself on this one:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs” (1 Cor 13:4–5).
