You Can’t Serve Both

No one can serve two masters.
               —Matthew 6:24

Satan hasn’t met much resistance in enticing humans to kneel at the shrine of possessions.

Unless we’re careful, our self-image is linked to our assets.

So is our evaluation of others. We tend to measure their worth by their possessions: the size of their house, their car, their job, their paycheck, their bank account, their stock portfolio.

Jesus said, “You cannot serve both God and Money.” He didn’t say you ought not to serve both—he said you cannot.

Wiliam Barclay wrote: “Surely there is no better description of a man’s god, than to say that his god is the power in whom he trusts; and when a man puts his trust in material things, then material things have become, not his support, but his god.”

Money is a good servant but a bad master.
