It’s Not All Up to You

You are not able to perform it by yourself.
                        —Exodus 18:18

Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came for a visit. He “was delighted to hear about all the good things the Lord had done for Israel” (Ex 18:9).

But as he watched Moses running non-stop from early morning till late night, old Jethro wasn’t impressed. “The thing that you do is not good. Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out,” he said.

Moses was a bit defensive (most too-busy people are) as he attempted to justify his frenzied schedule. Jethro didn’t buy it and advised delegating some of his work to others.

Are you one of those it’s-all-up-to-me people: too indispensable to slow down, too needed to say no, too proud to ask for help?

John Wesley said, “God’s workers die, but his work goes on.”

You are important but not indispensable.
