Grow up in every way into him
who is the head, into Christ.
—Ephesians 4:15
I always asked Larry the same question: “How are you?” He always gave the same answer: “As well as can be expected for an old man.” Larry thought like an old man. Moved like an old man. Felt like an old man. He was 54.
Middle age is not happily welcomed. We didn’t see it coming. It showed up in an eyeblink, uninvited.
If they had it to do over again, middle-agers would make something of themselves. But it’s too late, they say.
Nonsense. In midlife the sun is at its pinnacle. Capacity for accomplishment at its peak. Power at its prime. There’s plenty of gas in the tank.
There is, however, a downside. There’s an unsettling awareness of approaching old age and an obsession for security—therefore, a risk of becoming more materialistic and less spiritual.
Mark middle age as a danger zone.
But don’t stop growing.
