Guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.
—Proverbs 4:23
The leading cause of death in the United States is heart disease. Someone in this country has a heart attack every forty-two seconds, resulting in 610,000 heart-related deaths per year.
If your heart malfunctions, you’re in trouble.
Solomon spoke of another heart—one that controls conduct, not blood flow.
If this heart becomes diseased, it messes up your conduct: “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander” (Mt. 15:19).
On the other hand, keeping this heart healthy ensures healthy behavior: “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart” (Mt 12:35).
Heart health should be high on our list—
both physically and spiritually.
