You are not under law, but under grace.
—Romans 6:14
Modern-day advertising gurus didn’t invent the “What’s in it for me?” strategy. For all his country-boy reputation, John the Baptist, in introducing Jesus to his hearers, said, “From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another” (Jn 1:16).
The fullness of his grace: redeeming grace, pardoning grace, sustaining grace, comforting grace.
This prayer, by an unknown author, says it all:
“O Lord, give us grace to feel our need of grace! O Lord, give us grace to receive Thy grace! O Lord, give us grace to be thankful for the grace we receive! O Lord, give us grace to ask for still more grace! And give us grace, O Lord, to use the grace that Thou dost give!”
The fullness of his grace: “one blessing after another.”
Nothing makes a person so humble as grace—
and at the same time so confident.
