We put our hope in the Lord.
—Psalm 33:20
Last night I turned the final page of an on-the-edge-of-your-seat novel. Laying it aside, I thought, “I don’t know why I didn’t see that coming.” That’s the way of a good novel—it holds you in suspense until the last page, then hits you with a surprise ending.
Only God knows the end of our story. We stumble through a life of hills and valleys, unexpected turns and roadblocks. Sometimes we can see nothing good in what’s happening in the “right now”—and we’re unclear about how it will end. But hope assures us that the end of our story will be “Game won!”
God is bigger than our circumstances, however difficult they may seem—and he doesn’t leave us to negotiate them alone. “We put our hope in the Lord; He is our help and our shield” (Ps 33:20).
Hope eliminates despair.
