Why should it use up the soil?
—Luke 13:7
For three years he had been looking for fruit on his fig tree but found none. So, he told the gardener, “Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?” The tree was drawing sustenance from the soil but giving nothing in return.
There are two kinds of people: those who take more than they give and those who give more than they take.
Each of us was birthed at the risk of someone else’s life—and would not have survived a week without the care of others. We are beneficiaries of a civilization that we did not create—and a church that we did not build. We are duty-bound to pass it on.
We are indebted to the past and obligated to the future—to be givers, not just takers.
Do more than take up space.
