Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
—Matthew 5:5
This blessedness doesn’t come from thinking something, saying something, or doing something—but from being something.
Meekness is not something we’re born with but a disposition we develop. In his early manhood, Moses came upon a scene that infuriated him, and he killed a man. Yet, in his old age, “Moses was very meek above all men which were upon the face of the earth” (Nm 12:3). There was a mellowing process; he learned to control the passions that had once controlled him.
Inheriting the earth isn’t territorial—it’s attitudinal. It is the ability of the meek to fully enjoy the blessings they have on earth—the blessedness of gratitude and contentment. “The little that a good man owns is worth more than the wealth of all the wicked” (Ps 37:16).
Meekness is not weakness.
The meek are masters of self-control.
