[If] you put to death the misdeeds
of the body, you will live.
—Romans 8:13
In Colossians 3, Paul counsels Christians to put to death five destructive behaviors, abandon five speech flaws, and dress in a new wardrobe.
Five behaviors to be put to death (v. 5):
sexual immorality
impurity
lust
evil desires
greed
Five sins of speech to abandon (v. 8):
anger
rage
malice
slander
filthy language
And now that you have put to death bad behavior and stripped off the soiled garments of toxic speech, clothe yourself in this new wardrobe of grace (v. 12–14):
Compassion
Kindness
humility
gentleness
patience
forgiveness
love
Put off the old.
Put on the new.
