I will sing with my spirit,
but I will also sing with my mind.
—1 Corinthians 14:15
When we assemble for worship, only one person at a time will preach or pray. But we all join in singing—it’s the one thing we do together.
Prolific hymnist Charles Wesley hailed the beauty of singing: “Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise.”
Don’t drift into a snooze-mode of singing with the voice, disconnected from the mind. “Those who worship [God] must worship in spirit and truth” (Jn 4:24). We’re hitting the notes. Are we voicing the truth when we sing:
“All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give.”
“Not for ease or worldly pleasure, Not for fame my prayer shall be; Gladly will I toil and suffer, Only let me walk with Thee.”
“Take my silver and my gold: Not a mite would I withhold.”
Sing cheerfully—and truthfully.
