Sing and make music
in your heart to the Lord.
—Ephesians 5:19
Music has always played a central role with God’s people. When the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, they sang a celebratory song (Ex 15:1–21). When the temple was dedicated, they praised God in song (2 Chr 5:12–13).
New Testament worship includes speaking “to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” (Eph 5:19).
During the Welsh Revivals of the early twentieth century, G. Campbell Morgan observed the unifying influence of music in the meetings. If a public figure preached or prayed too long, someone would begin to sing softly. Soon, others would join in until the volume drowned out the speaker. As tempting as it is, you probably shouldn’t try this.
But if you’re worried, depressed, or hurting, think of some grand old hymn and sing.
You can’t sigh and sing at the same time.
