The Lord Almighty is with us.
—Psalm 46:11
My mother was twelve years old when her mother died in the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918.
Seven of my friends have become death victims of COVID-19.
Such losses raise the old question: “Why do bad things happen to good people?” And we discover that this old question has no new answer.
At some point, each of us becomes a player in this sad scene. We struggle to find a place of solace where we can let our weight down.
While the tears of heartache persist, perhaps there is no better place to land than the first and last verses of Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. . . . The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
When God seems invisible to you,
know that you are not invisible to Him.
