If you want to be My disciple,
it will cost you everything.
—Luke 14:33
Jesus’ words were offensive to some, and “many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him” (Jn 6:66). I can’t feel a connection, for I know none of the individual stories—many turned away.
But it comes home to me when I know the story of one person who turned away—like the young man who wanted eternal life and asked Jesus what he needed to do to get it.
Knowing that his greatest vulnerability was his attachment to his wealth, Jesus told him to give it up and follow him. “He went away sad, because he had great wealth” (Mk 10:22).
The Lord knows where you are most vulnerable. Do you? Is there anything—anything at all—that would cause you to turn away from him?
There can only be one Number One.
