I stand at the door and knock.
—Revelation 3:20
English artist William Holman Hunt’s painting, The Light of the World, hangs in the side chapel at Keble College, Oxford, England. It depicts Jesus knocking on a cottage door that has no handle.
Hunt said he wanted the painting to represent the imagery of Revelation 3:20—“I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
The door, with no outside handle, can be opened only from the inside. Jesus offers himself, his grace and salvation to all—but never forces his way into anyone’s life.
“I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” It’s your move.
Jesus won’t barge in, but he offers
to come in if you’ll open the door.
