[He] has freed us from our sins by his blood.
—Revelation 1:5
There was a breathtaking surprise in Robert Smith’s May 19, 2019 commencement address at Morehouse College. He told the cap and gown-clad graduates, “We’re gonna put a little fuel in your bus. . . . My family is making a grant to eliminate your student loans.”
The nearly 400 graduates owed $40 million in student loans. Smith’s gift wiped out their debt.
We have an enormous debt that we can never pay. But grace erased it: “this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:8).
He paid a debt He did not owe
I owed a debt I could not pay . . .
And now I sing a brand new song: Amazing Grace
Christ Jesus paid a debt that I could never pay.

You maxed out, but
your debt has been paid in full.
