Those who believe in me,
even though they die, will live.
—John 11:25
Jesus shared Martha’s grief at the death of her brother. But I fancy a sparkle in his eye when he said to her: “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live” (Jn 11:25).
I saw that sparkle recently. I’d been called to preside at the funeral of a good man. When I entered the room where the family had gathered, his dear wife of sixty-six years approached. With a smile on her lips and a sparkle in her eye, she said, “He was so ready to go. Don’t worry about me; I know where he is.”
Death doesn’t have the last word. Jesus says—I think with a sparkle in his eye—“Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live.”
The prize isn’t to live forever here,
but to live forever there.
