Your ears will hear a voice . . . saying,
“This is the way; walk in it.”
—Isaiah 30:21
In Genesis 3, God shows up walking in Eden in the cool of the day. But there is nothing there, or anywhere else in the thousand or so pages of your Bible, describing what he looks like.
The second commandment nixed making an image of him as an object of worship. We might be tempted to do that if we knew what he looked like. But we don’t.
He can’t be seen.
But he can be heard.
He speaks—through prophets and patriarchs, priests and poets, the Son and the Spirit.
Your Bible is the Word—the word about God and the word of God.
Faith comes from hearing the word (Rom 10:17).
“Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks” (Heb 3:7 NET).
“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear” (Lk 14:35).
God speaks. We decide
whether or not to listen.
