You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
—Psalm 23:5
You like to dine with friends.
But God sets a table for you in the presence of your enemies, for some foes—those that lodge within—are always present: terrorists of temptation, failure, sin; of envy, hatred, revenge; of loneliness, anxiety, fear.
In the presence of these enemies God invites you to the table to feast on forgiveness of your imprudent yesterdays, strength for your today, and release from fears of your tomorrows.
You do not have to vanquish your enemies before God will be your host and set your table.
The One we love the most
is now our gracious host,
Come take the bread,
come drink the wine,
come share the Lord.
