You cannot serve both God and Money.
—Matthew 6:24
Satan hasn’t met much resistance in enticing us to worship money. Our self-image is linked to our assets. So is our evaluation of others. We measure their worth by their possessions: the size of their house, their car, their job; the size of their paycheck, their bank account, their stock portfolio.
Jesus was clear: “You cannot serve both God and Money.” He didn’t say you ought not to serve both, he said you cannot.
“Surely,” wrote William Barclay, “there is no better description of a man’s god, than to say that his god is the power in whom he trusts; and when a man puts his trust in material things, then material things have become, not his support, but his god.”
Money is a good servant, but a terrible master.
