The pride of your heart has deceived you.
—Obadiah 1:3
The Edomites were a cocky bunch: “Who can bring me down?” they crowed. The answer? “I will bring you down, declares the Lord.”
When Babylonian soldiers sacked Jerusalem, the Edomites signed on to help. Obadiah declared, “Your friends will deceive and overpower you … As you have done, it will be done to you.”
Sure enough, Babylon used them, then abused them—turned on them and annihilated them.
Same song, second verse for Babylon: “I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless” (Isa. 13:12).
Edom and Babylon both bit the dust.
People get swellheaded about many things: beauty, success, knowledge, piety—even their humility.
Beware of pride: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Prov. 16:18).
The puffed up are just a pinprick
away from popping.
