Guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.
—Proverbs 4:23
Your heart is the size of your fist, weighs only a half-pound, pumps five quarts of blood a minute, and beats 37 million times a year. It’s a vital part of your physical equipment; if it malfunctions you’re in trouble.
Solomon spoke of another heart—one that controls conduct, not blood flow. It is a vital part of your spiritual equipment. If this heart becomes diseased is messes up your conduct: “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander” (Matt. 15:19).
On the other hand, keeping this heart healthy insures healthy behavior: “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart” (Matt. 12:35 NLT).
You may not be what you think you are;
but what you think, you are.
